How to clean and lube a chain
A clean, lubed chain is quieter, shifts better and makes your chain, cassette and chainrings last far longer. Ten minutes every couple of weeks is plenty.

You'll need
Tools
- Old rags
- Bike degreaser or warm soapy water
- An old brush or toothbrush
- Chain lube — wet lube for winter, dry lube for summer
Step by step
How to do it
- Wipe the chainHold a rag soaked in degreaser around the lower run of the chain and pedal backwards for 20–30 turns.
- Scrub the sprocketsBrush the cassette and front chainrings to get rid of built-up grime.
- Rinse and dryRinse with clean water (no pressure washer) and dry the chain thoroughly with a clean rag.
- Lube each rollerPedal backwards slowly and put one drop of lube on each roller on the inside of the chain.
- Wipe off the excessLeave it a few minutes, then wipe the outside of the chain. Lube belongs inside the rollers — extra on the outside just collects dirt.
Not going to plan?
Bring it in instead if…
- The chain squeaks again within days
- Gears skip when you pedal hard
- The chain is rusty or has stiff links
- You want the chain measured for wear — it's free
